Cheryl was a competitive athlete (tennis) in her younger days until she sustained a knee injury during her university days which put a stop to her participation in competitive sports. Her injuries became increasingly apparent as she entered the workforce, and worsened after having children. Her injuries and pains impeded her daily activities as simple as walking without pain.

Cheryl embarked on her Pilates journey in 2013 and was amazed by the effectiveness of good Pilates. Determined to continue to fix her injuries and to follow her vocation, Cheryl studied Classical Pilates under the school of Romana’s Pilates so that she can share these benefits she reaped with others.

History of Pilates

Pilates, originally called “Contrology,” was developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century. Born in 1883 in Germany, Joseph Pilates was a sickly child who suffered from asthma, rickets, and rheumatic fever. Determined to improve his physical health, he studied various forms of exercise, including gymnastics, bodybuilding, and martial arts.

During World War I, while interned in England, Pilates began refining his exercise techniques, which focused on controlled movements and core strength. He used minimal equipment, often improvising with items like bed springs to create resistance. After the war, he returned to Germany briefly before moving to the United States in 1926. There, he and his wife Clara opened a studio in New York City, where they taught his method to dancers and athletes.

Pilates’ method emphasizes the mind-body connection, proper breathing, and alignment of the spine. It has since evolved into a popular form of exercise practiced worldwide, known for its benefits in improving flexibility, strength, and overall physical health.

With the goal of building a solid foundation, Cheryl spent more than 1000 hours in her apprenticeship and obtained her comprehensive teaching certificate.

Teaching Pilates is a craft that requires knowledge, experience, continuous learning and evolution. That is why Cheryl is always open to new learning to help her clients. Expanding beyond Pilates, Cheryl has equipped additional knowledge through her studies in NeuroKinetic Therapy & Trigger Point release to better help her clients, and she continues to grow and evolve with continuous learning through her own studies and relevant seminars.

Cheryl has worked with clients with various different conditions including plantar fasciitis, diatasis recti, herniated discs, posterior tibial tendon dysfunction, shoulder impingement, symphysis pubis dysfunction, scoliosis and knee injuries just to name a few.

Cheryl has more than 10 years of practising and teaching experience in Singapore at her home studio and other commercial studios. She has also taught group Pilates mat classes at studios, at university (physical classes) & to hospital staff (online classes).

Cheryl is now based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and is teaching there.

Language wise, Cheryl is very fluent in English, comfortable with Cantonese, and is currently working on improving her teaching in Mandarin, and is very keen to learn Bahasa Melayu.
